Welcome to Dreams Come Brew, where whimsical dreams are brewed into reality one cup at a time! Our journey began with the birth of our third baby, a little boy named Arthur Rion. (Rion, a name that holds special meaning, is in honor of his late Uncle Nickolas Rion.) Arthur entered the world two months early, weighing a tiny 4 lbs and 13 oz, and we spent what felt like the longest month of our lives in the NICU with him. It was there that we discovered how donations help stock family rooms with snacks and coffee, providing a small comfort during challenging times. When we finally brought Arthur home with a clean bill of health, I launched Dreams Come Brew. It was a way for me to work from home and give back by stocking hospital family rooms with coffee and snacks. Little did we know that our journey was about to take a dramatic turn. Just under two short months later, on December 16th, we were celebrating our middle daughter's 5th birthday. Arthur slept most of the day, and we couldn't get him to wake up or eat. At dinner, he woke up and drank a full 4 oz bottle but soon after threw up. Concerned, I took him home and contacted his doctor. We thought it might be a stomach flu, but the doctor advised us to take him to the ER. At the ER, the staff initially thought Arthur looked fine, but the provider on duty had a bad feeling. She said, "I'd rather send him to a children's hospital and be laughed at for being wrong than send you home and be right." Within an hour, we were on an ambulance heading to the hospital in OKC. There, they noticed he wasn't keeping feeds down, and a nurse agreed that his breathing sounded off. She ordered an x-ray, which revealed that his heart had enlarged. An echo confirmed our fears, and we were told Arthur needed emergency surgery. God knew I needed support, and as I heard, "It's alright, I know her; she's a friend of mine," echoing down the hall, I saw an old classmate. She dropped everything to hug me as I tried to gather my strength. My husband and mom were on their way to the hospital, and soon, we were preparing for a helicopter transfer to either Arkansas or Dallas, whichever hospital could take us. We arrived in Dallas, where Arthur was calmly sleeping in a tiny "kangaroo crib." The team at Dallas Children's Hospital quickly took charge. They diagnosed Arthur with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and after taking an in-depth family history, they decided to do a genetic workup. My mother shared the story of my brother Nick, who passed away at seven months from an enlarged heart, providing a crucial piece of the puzzle. Arthur celebrated Christmas via Facetime with his sisters and received gifts from the Santa Shop, bringing a bit of cheer to our hospital stay. However, the next day, Arthur became tachycardic, his heart racing at 220 BPM, and he was struggling to breathe. The team decided to intubate him and later put him on life support. That night was harrowing, with Arthur crashing several times, but our incredible nurse never gave up. In mid-January, we finally had answers: Arthur had Barth Syndrome, the same condition that took his uncle. Arthur spent the next three months on an LVAD, during which he suffered a stroke and began having seizures. On March 18th, we received the call that they had found a donor heart. The morning of the 19th, Arthur went into the OR for the transplant. It was the longest day of our lives, but the surgery went well, and by April, Arthur was out of the hospital. None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary team at Dallas Children's Hospital. Their expertise, compassion, and unwavering dedication saved our son's life. We often refer to the events leading to Arthur's recovery as "dominoes," meticulously stacked by none other than the Divine Creator. The alignment of these moments, the people who stepped into our lives, and the unwavering support we received all pointed to a higher power guiding us through. Dreams Come Brew is more than just a coffee company. It’s a testament to the strength of family, the power of community, and the miracles that unfold when we place our faith in God. With every purchase, you’re not only enjoying a delightful cup of coffee but also supporting children's hospitals in need. Together, we can bring warmth, comfort, and hope to families just like ours. Thank you for being a part of our journey and for helping us make dreams come true, one cup at a time.
